Resistance controls the flow of energy. It is a bidirectional property, conducting in the direction of lowest impedance. Capacitance is the ability to hold a charge. Capacitors can be charged in either direction and will discharge in the direction of lowest impedance. If there is no path to ground, an ideal capacitor will hold a charge indefinitely, like a perfect battery.
